Vocal Concert 2009
In late May the Vocal Concert was held with 2 sold out concerts in the Royce Theatre as the vocalists of Ruyton again showed what wonderful talent the school has. More than 120 girls took part using the theme of “Earth, Sea and Sky.” As is always the case, the quality of the singing was outstanding. The girls from both the Junior and Senior schools all took part in what is one of the most important and eagerly anticipated nights in the Musical Calendar. Some of the songs featured included “You Can’t Stop The Beat”, “Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head”, “Colours of the Wind”, “Bare Necessities” and “From A Distance”.
Congratulations to all the school vocal teachers, led by Miss Jane Summers and our Junior School Music Director Mrs. Rebecca Barker. Also, thank you to Sonia Horbelt and the Stage Band for their participation and FORMA for their assistance on the night.
Annual Music Concert 2009
The Annual Music Concert, this year titled 'The British Connection', took place at the Camberwell Civic Centre on Friday September 4th. Approximately 600 parents and friends were treated to a musical kaleidoscope featuring everything musically British: Ralph Vaughan Williams and Elgar, Robbie Williams, the Spice Girls and Cold Play as well some of the finest melodies from Ireland and Scotland.
The night started with Elgar’s “Land of Hope and Glory” performed by the combined Concert Band and Wind Chimes. This then led us into “Declaration and Flourish” taken from the Vaughan Williams Suite. Other highlights included the Paganini and Corelli Strings playing “Viva La Vida”, the Senior Strings’ rendition of Elgar’s beautiful “Nimrod" from "The Enigma Variations” and the wonderful performance of Elgar’s “Concerto for Cello Movement 1” by Stephanie Stamopoulos. The Stage Band and friends concluded the first half with some Robbie Williams and Spice Girls.
In the second half, the Percussion Ensemble left us speechless as they managed to create a “Stomp”- like rhythmical performance featuring brooms, movement and choreography. The remainder of the night included performances from the Choirs of Ruyton (“Orinoco Flow”), Cinque’s jazz waltz version of “Greensleeves” and the Walsh Singers singing “Gloves” in the dark, with the girls wearing white gloves, all shining under UV light.
The finale by the Henty Orchestra took the audience back to the 60s and arguably to Britain’s most famous of all musical exports, the Beatles. It was a great way to end what was an inspiring night of music.
